Communications to your Office

Getting communications systems to your garden office is straightforward and there are a variety of options to consider when connecting to phone, faxes, and the internet.

The most basic is to lay the necessary wiring from your house to the garden building when electricity is connected. This may not be the best method however, as it can require coordination with a phone company and prove to be fairly expensive, especially considering there are now cheaper ways to make phone calls by using the internet.

Internet

The simplest and cheapest way is to use wireless broadband. You will need a wireless modem which are usually supplied free or as a low cost option through any internet broadband provider such as Tiscally, BT Broadband, and Bulldog. The modem connects to your phone or cable line in your home.

To receive wireless broadband, your office computer needs to be wireless enabled (WiFi, 802.11b, 802.11g, or Airport) or you can purchase a plug-in wireless adapter quite cheaply. Wireless networks are protected to prevent unauthorised usage.

Phones

Traditional wireless landline phones provide a simple way of having a phone in the garden office without laying a cable. Phones can also be added that operate using the wireless internet network. These VoIP phones work like traditional phones but offer low call rates as they use the internet. You can either use a wireless VoIP handset that functions with any wireless modem, or a USB phone / headset through your computer. There are many companies such as Skype, Tiscali, Wandoo, and Vonage that offer this service.

Faxes

As with telephones there are also services available that use the internet to send and receive faxes using your email. This is much more convenient than the conventional paper method. Providers include Tiscali, eFax, and Yak.
